That page is a disgrace in terms of search engine readability. Has that company every head of search engines? hosting? standards? Come on, even their 404 page returns 500. Oh, we're talking about Microsoft here, I guess that covers it. sigh. "Standards, what standards? we're Microsoft!"

p.s. The link bomb theory is also bogus unless they filter out whole domain's because one blog in the domain goes mental on links. Currently all spaces are being filtered out.

The Writer Zone is Irrelevant Theory - Google’s search result is right and the Writer Zone is actually not the most relevant link about Windows Live Writer. There have been several references to Google weighing the element very heavily, so since the title of the blog isn’t “Windows Live Writer”, it doesn’t get ranked as highly as all of the other pages that do.

Bogus: Even spaces with the search term in the title don't show up as expected (try searching for "Torres Talking")

Trashy HTML Theory - The HTML generated by Windows Live Spaces is so bad that Google’s search indexer won’t include it.

Bogus: See Mike's response

Blogs are Hot Air Theory - Google’s algorithm weighs inbound links from blogs very lightly. Since most links to Writer Zone are from blogs, this makes the Writer Zone ranking more volatile as more non-blog sources link to other websites (like the Writer download URL or http://ideas.live.com)

Bogus: Up until a week or two ago, Google search results were showing Windows Live Spaces in the first page of search results. However, this vanishing from the results has happened in the past with MSN Spaces and it was in effect for about six months of 2006, lasting until just after Windows Live Spaces launched.

This doesn't leave us with many options does it...

Hi Spike, I saw the email you dropped over to Google. I'm talking to Scoble tomorrow and I wrote a first-blush reaction here:
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/scoble-visiting-the-plex/

But the more that I look into this, the more that I think it's related to the spaces.msn.com to spaces.live.com migration that started en force around August 1st. I think it has to do with the sheer number of urls showing up on spaces.live.com (because we see the 301/permanent redirect when we go crawl the pages on spaces.msn.com). As there's a big influx of urls, that can raise some flags. I'll look into it more on our side tomorrow, and we'll do whatever we can to make sure that we handle the Writer blog, nay, all spaces.live.com urls, well. That might end up being adjusting the thresholds or hostload of how much we're willing to crawl spaces.msn.com or spaces.live.com (or possibly something else), but it's certainly in everyone's interests to score and rank the Writer blog the best way we can estimate that it should be ranked--thanks for mentioning this.

The trashy HTML theory is bogus - WL Spaces have always had decent PR despite our many URL changes.
